Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger have agreed to quickly form a new
force that would comprise 2,800 soldiers to fight the Boko Haram
insurgents.
The defence ministers of Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger said they would each contribute 700 troops to the force.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, Niger’s Defence
Minister, Karidio Mahamadou, said they were determined to “eradicate
this curse”.
Boko Haram’s insurgency is focused on Nigeria, but it has carried out some cross-border raids.
It was suspected of blowing up the Ngala bridge, which lies on a key
transport link between north-eastern Nigeria and Cameroon, on Wednesday.
Cars and lorries loaded with goods are stranded on the highway, residents told the BBC.
The regional defence ministers met in Niger’s capital, Niamey, on
Wednesday, to hold further discussions on the growing threat posed by
Boko Haram.
While the meeting was ongoing, the Islamist group again unleashed
terror on Kaduna killing 70 people. A former Head of State, General
Muhammadu Buhari (retd) who was caught in the violent attacks narrowly
escaped death.
Boko Haram has not commented, but it is suspected to have carried out the attacks.
It launched an insurgency in 2009 to create an Islamic state in Nigeria.
In May, the four West African countries, whose borders meet at Lake
Chad, agreed to share intelligence and coordinate border security.
Efforts to step up regional co-operation gained momentum after Boko
Haram caused an international outcry by abducting more than 200 girls
from a boarding school in north-eastern Nigeria.
The girls are said to be held in the vast Sambisa forest, along Nigeria’s border with Cameroon.
Boko Haram has carried out a spate of abductions in Cameroon – including that of tourists and priests.
Unconfirmed reports say the group has also recruited fighters from Chad and Niger.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has appointed Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba as the new Bafana Bafana coach.
The 63-year old takes over from Gordon Igesund whose contract had expired, supersport.com reports.
Mashaba’s appointment brings to an end weeks of speculation and debate on who will take over the senior national team’s job.
Announcing Mashaba’s appointment at a packed media conference on
Saturday, SAFA President, Dr. Danny Jordaan, said the entire National
Executive Committee of the body was confident of a new era under
Mashaba’s reign.
“He has a proven record, is a hard worker and he fulfilled all
requirements we were looking for to drive our senior national team back
to where we all believe it belong – at the top,” said Dr. Jordaan.
In accepting his appointment, an elated Mashaba said he was relishing the challenge and the expectations of the entire nation.
“First of all, I would like to thank the SAFA NEC for the confidence
that they have demonstrated in me. This is a massive but exciting test. I
am elated and ready for the challenge,” said Mashaba from Mali where he
is with the country’s U- 20 team.
“I will do all my best to bring back the winning mentality within
Bafana Bafana. With the support of all South Africans, the goal of
taking Bafana Bafana back to the top is very achievable,” he stated.
He coached Bafana Bafana from 2002-2004 and this will be his second stint with the national team.
His first assignment will be the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier for
Morocco 2015 against Sudan on the weekend of 5/7 September in Khartoum.
The League Management Company (LMC) has announced that Enugu Rangers,
Enyimba and five other clubs have been cleared after fulfilling all
financial obligations to their players.
According to information gathered, the latest clubs to be cleared are
– Heartland, Sunshine Stars, Enyimba International, Warri Wolves,
El-Kanemi Warriors, Rangers International and Lobi Stars.
They joined Kano Pillars, Abia Warriors and Bayelsa United who were
the first to be cleared by the league’s governing body earlier in the
week, kickOffNigeria.com reports.
All 20 clubs in the Glo Premier League had at the start of the season
received N10 million each from the LMC as the first installment of the
“Basic Award,” and the LMC had said they could receive more in the
course of the season if they are found to have complied with
requirements.
To this effect, only debt-free clubs as well as those who have
complied with the N150, 000 monthly minimum wage will benefit from the
Basic Award. Indebted clubs will also be prevented from operating in the
mid-season transfer market.
“We have created these procedures to protect players from the
previous tales of unpaid salary arrears and will be working with the
clubs to ensure overall improvement of players’ welfare,” chief
operating officer of the LMC, Salihu Abubakar, disclosed.
He, however, revealed that Gombe United, Sharks and Giwa FC were
refused clearances after documents they submitted indicated that they
pay players below the minimum wage.
