Nigeria: Nyako Impeached - Faces Treason Charges

ABUJA-- There were indications last night that the impeached governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, might be arrested by security agents and charged to court for alleged treason.
While the treason charges against the former governor is billed to take off in one court, the Economic & Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, would be prosecuting Nyako in another court for allegedly looting funds of the state said to have been stashed in a local bank.
The governor and the North-East Region manager of the said bank will be charged with another top official of Adamawa State Government, who is being held by the anti-graft agency for aiding and abetting the looting.
A competent security source told Vanguard that the Presidency has already ordered the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, to file treason charges against the governor, who lost his plum job yesterday.
The charges, according to the source, had been prepared by the Federal Government even before the impeachment process against Nyako started and would merely be completed with the governor's removal from office.
Nyako to face treason charges
Findings by Vanguard revealed that Nyako is to be tried specifically for levying war against Nigeria and inciting Nigerians and the international community against the person of President Goodluck Jonathan by accusing Jonathan of committing genocide against Northerners under the guise of fighting terrorism.
One of the sources said: "The AGF is ready with the treason charges against Nyako, who never showed any remorse over his letter to the Northern Governors Forum and refused to retract the contents and apologise even when he had the opportunity to do so.
"The AGF has since been directed to file treason charges against the governor, who was fired by the Adamawa State House of Assembly on Tuesday (yesterday) because what he did was levying war against the nation and inciting the world against President Jonathan.
"If the former governor is lucky, he will survive the legal onslaught against him but he may be in for many years in jail if convicted for his indiscretion and deliberate action to malign the President of Nigeria," the source said.
Why Presidency dumped Ngilari
On why the Presidency withdrew its earlier support for the Deputy Governor to succeed Nyako, the source explained that Ngilari lost out because he tried to join forces with Nyako and work against the interest of the PDP stakeholders in the state.
He explained that Ngilari lost the support of the Presidency and the PDP stakeholders in the state when it was discovered that he had accepted to take over from Nyako and make Nyako's son his deputy.
"Ngilari lost out when the Presidency got information that he had reached an agreement with Nyako to resign for him to take over as governor and make his son deputy governor so as to continue to protect the former governor's interests. He thought he was smart," the source said.
Vanguard further learnt that Ngilari, a Christian, was prevented from succeeding Nyako, a Muslim, so as not to stoke ethno-religious crisis in the state and worsen the security problem in the North-East.
His removal from office notwithstanding, Nyako remained boisterous, yesterday, insisting that he accepted the action against him in good faith, as it was merely a judgment by man and not God.

According to him, Omieh who stays in Mile 3, Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was caught to be in possession of two pairs of army camouflage, camouflage T-shirt and short, one pair of desert boot, one jungle hat and three handsets.

He also said the suspect had been parading herself as a soldier attached to the 149 Battalion, but deployed to Joint Task Force, Warri, Delta State for duty.

Ademola revealed that the suspect’s boyfriend, Mr. Collins Jegede, revealed how he met Omieh on a social network with photos of her dressed in military outfit.

Mr. Jegede who then wooed her and she paid him a visit in January 2014 in full military uniform.

Jegede also reciprocated the visit, by visiting Omieh but was shocked to see that she was living in a hotel at the Ijaiye area of Lagos State instead of 149 Battalion, Ojo Military Barracks, where she had claimed to be posted to.

Adegoke said, “Jegede reported the case to the officer-in-charge of a military checkpoint at Owo following his suspicion that his lover was a fake soldier.”

The suspect Omieh admitted that she was a fake soldier, adding that it was meant to make ends meet after her father died which led to her drop-out from school. She also added that she bought the military uniforms from Army depot in Zaria.

Ondo State 323 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, has arrested a woman who goes by the name Angela Omieh, for posing as a soldier.

Among the things recovered from the woman was sets of military uniform, police extract and a sworn affidavit for loss of her military identity card.

Captain Ademola Adegoke who is the Public Relations Officer of the brigade told reporters that Omieh was arrested following a report by her boyfriend. 
According to him, Omieh who stays in Mile 3, Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was caught to be in possession of two pairs of army camouflage, camouflage T-shirt and short, one pair of desert boot, one jungle hat and three handsets.

He also said the suspect had been parading herself as a soldier attached to the 149 Battalion, but deployed to Joint Task Force, Warri, Delta State for duty.

Ademola revealed that the suspect’s boyfriend, Mr. Collins Jegede, revealed how he met Omieh on a social network with photos of her dressed in military outfit.

Mr. Jegede who then wooed her and she paid him a visit in January 2014 in full military uniform.

Jegede also reciprocated the visit, by visiting Omieh but was shocked to see that she was living in a hotel at the Ijaiye area of Lagos State instead of 149 Battalion, Ojo Military Barracks, where she had claimed to be posted to.

Adegoke said, “Jegede reported the case to the officer-in-charge of a military checkpoint at Owo following his suspicion that his lover was a fake soldier.”

You've heard of whale watching, in which tourists come from far and wide to see the majestic marine mammals in action. The Canadian town of Trout River, Newfoundland, is currently dealing with an 81-foot-long blue whale carcass that washed up on shore a little over a week ago. As the whale decomposes, internal gases have inflated the carcass much like a balloon. The rotting stench is horrific, local residents say.

So just get rid of it, you might suggest. The problem, as we wrote in January, is that moving dead, beached whales is incredibly difficult given both their bloated size, and dangers the create should they come apart. In the past, local beach communities have tried burial, live dissection, cranes, and even dynamite to remove the stinking whale carcasses from the area, mostly with disastrous results. Almost all attempts inevitably end in an exploding animals, as the corpse is popped like a giant zit and the noxious gases and rotting innards leak out.

Not that out-of-town residents even want it to be moved. People have been flocking to the town in the past week to get a look at the carcass, according to Jenny Parsons, a restaurant owner in town. "People have been so close they've been actually standing on it," she told CBC. "Not a good idea, because if somebody gets swallowed into the insides of that whale it's going to be quite dangerous to get them out of there," she said. 

At least one Trout River resident wants to take advantage of the large influx of gawkers. She told The Guardian, "Right now we have a stream of traffic coming to see this whale, and we would like that to develop further into maybe 'What can we do with this whale for future tourism?'" If the whale's smell drives away regular tourists (and residents), they might as well try to make that up by promoting it for dead whale watching tours, she suggests.

I really wanted to win the Ballon d’Or for a second time, so receiving it from two legends like Pele and Platini is a privilege. Now I hope I can do it all again next year and claim my third.

Aside from this award, 2013 featured some remarkable moments in your career. Does one in particular stand out?
I don’t know if I can single one out above all the rest. Actually yes… qualification for the World Cup. I’d say that was what I remember most and was the most emotional thing.

Having recently hit the 400-goal mark as a professional, which would you say was the most significant and why?
Every goal I score is special for me. That said, some obviously carry more weight than others, coming as they do in a final tournament or a final itself. However, all of them are important – at least for me, as they form part of my culture and are part of me. I love scoring goals and for them to be significant in our winning things.

These are emotional times for Portuguese football. On the one hand the national team has secured their place at the upcoming FIFA World Cup – in Brazil of all places – while on the other your compatriots recently lost a legend of the game in Eusebio.
I feel a great deal of sadness about that. We lost someone who was very important to Portugal, a genuine flag-bearer, so it’s natural that my compatriots around the world were deeply saddened.  But that’s also part of life and we shouldn’t forget that. We’ll all pass on one day, which is why we should look back on and embrace the positive things that happened last year. The same applies to his life of Eusebio, who was such an important player. He did so many positive things and won so many trophies, both for his national team and club sides – most notably Benfica. He’s someone who will remain forever in our hearts.

Portugal enjoying a good World Cup campaign would be a fitting way to honour him, wouldn’t it?
We are hoping to have a good World Cup, but you mustn’t forget we had a very difficult time in qualifying and then had to face Sweden in the play-offs – two games which turned out to be extremely complicated. But of course the World Cup will be a completely different challenge and we’ll prepare for it differently too. We were all really keen to get there, particularly because it’s being played in Brazil, due to the culture over there and the fact it’s the country where the game is played most. For all those reasons it’s an honour, though we know it’s going to be an extremely tough competition. Our priority is getting through the group phase and then we’ll see what happens.

What are your earliest World Cup memories?
It’s hard to say because it was so many years ago. I remember the odd game, yes, though in fact my strongest memories are of matches involving Brazil.

You’ve starred for Manchester United and now Real Madrid: does club football get any bigger or more demanding?
In my opinion, we’re talking about the two greatest clubs in the world. And of course, that’s a source of huge pride for me. When I was at United I won major titles as well as my first Ballon d’Or. And now I’m at Real Madrid, who are the world’s biggest club and one with which I have a very strong bond. I’ve been here for four years and I’ve just signed up for a another five because I think they’re the ideal club for me, the best club, and that’s why I’m so happy to be playing for them.

Madrid are being made to wait for their longed-for tenth European Cup/Champions League crown. Does the obsession with La Décima pile on the  pressure?                                                                     
It does generate some pressure, yes, but it also creates excitement too. Real Madrid are in the hunt for winning the Champions League every year, which is an extremely important competition and one all the teams involved in want to win. Let’s see if luck goes our way this year and we can claim La Décima, which is what we all want.

It’s a given that you’re held in high regard by your fellow professionals, but which players do you particularly admire?
I’m not going to single out just one, but right now there are great players in every team: the ones with me [at Madrid], the lads at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and in other teams like Manchester United and City. It's wonderful to see a new generation of great footballers too, which is really good for those of us competing with them. And it’s also good for the game. I wouldn’t like to pick just one, because there are lots of players I enjoy watching and playing against.

In our final question, we’d like you to finish off the following sentence for us: “In 2014, Cristiano Ronaldo will be…”
(Thinks before answering) …will be the same man he was in 2013.
